TikTok gained its popularity by being a short-form video platform. TikTok seems to be expanding into YouTube's Domain by offering its users the ability to post videos that last up to 10 minutes. Time will tell whether or not this strategy will pay off.
“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience,” said a company spokesperson in a statement given to The Verge. “Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok. Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”
As TikTok increases the duration of its videos platforms like Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat have offered their users ways to publish short-form videos. YouTube has Shorts, Instgram has reels and Snapchat has Spotlight. Each of these services were introduced to try and keep users on their platforms as TikTok takes more and more market share.
